Can you see the bird in the picture?
The bird is actually huge in reality.
As big as a duck.
I thought it could never fly.
But it does fly!
and it's always loitering around in the school.
Mmmmmmm.
Anyone knows what bird it is?

126-2

Part two of 126th post.
Yay.

No picture will be shown this time.
No worries.
I am just going to untangle my little thoughts in my mind.

So I was watching the interview videos with the candidates of the Miss Universe.
I have realised everyone is speaking in English whether or not they are fluent in English.
Some people have commented on some candidates' English skills, mostly just making fun of accent and wrong grammar.
I then saw an interview video of Miss Spain and she was the only one who actually spoke in her own mother tongue that she is comfortable with.
Then there goes a comment on that, 'At least China tried'.
Hence this person is obviously saying that Miss Spain did not even try to reply the interview in English at all.
But then how does it matter?
She is speaking in the language that she feels the most comfortable to answer the questions in the interview. Thus, she is presenting her nation in the competition, hence emphasizing her cultural identity could be a plus point for her as well.
I do understand that English nowadays is recognised as an international language.
However, that does not mean that everyone should be able to speak English like a native.
I am writing my thoughts in English, but it is not perfect.
Can you say something about that?
It is definitely not my mother tongue or first language.
It has been only 4 years since I started practicing English.
Before laughing at someone's poor level of English, please think back.
Wouldn't learning and talking in a new language be hard for you too?

Dragged from my bloated brain caused by exams and alcohols.

Chaos.

I was in Long Street with Aurea who is from Angola one day and she was braiding my hair.
Aurea then said, 'Oh my gosh, everyone is looking at us. It might look funny for people to see a Black person to braid a White hair.'
Mmmmm. Let's talk about hair.
My hair is not like White's hair.
It is pretty much different from the White's. Mine is thicker, I assume.
However, it is still seen as the White's hair since my hair is different from the Black's hair.
Oh well, I tried to help people understand that my hair is not like the White's, but then I guess it seems more or less the same for those who have different style of hair.

Mmmm. I am not actually sure about whatever I am talking about today.
Much of craps.
Can I blame the exams please? Hehehe.

Have a great day fellows!

When I saw this thing on the beach, I thought it was a tail of dinosaur.
I then assumed that it's a tail of dinosaur although my mum was saying that it's just a seaweed kind of thing came from the sea.
Mmmmmm. Maybe it is. But it is too huge to be just seaweed, mum.
So I went closer, looking at it closer. I hoped if I'd find blood or flesh around it.
But nope.
I just was seaweed.
Booooooo.

Sedi eating Chinese food!
It was a birthday of friend of mine who was also on an exchange from Malaysia to South Africa.
So we bought some Chinese food from Chinese Town in the central of Johannesburg for the birthday feast.
And this is Sedi, a friend of mine trying out Chinese food with chopsticks!
It was her very time to use chopsticks and eat Chinese cuisine.
In the end, she almost gave up using chopsticks and used them as forks to pick up food. Hahah.
Just for the record, using chopsticks is also a mission for Asians who culturally use chopsticks daily.
Why?
Because it is also difficult for us to use chopsticks in the right way!
I bet there would only half of people who can actually use chopsticks in the right way among those chopsticks users.
Even myself use the chopsticks in the wrong way. :/
In fact, I do have some Western friends who use chopsticks in the perfect way.
So, yup. Using chopsticks is hard in conclusion.

Look what I found in a old bookstore! hehe
By the way, there is quite a number of old bookstore where you can exchange books or just buy books along on Long Street.
So it'd be a lovely idea to grab a random book to read in a bookstore.
Well, I like to do that often. Hahaha.
It would be quite uncomfortable to do that in certain bookstores though.. :/
They would give you 'buy it or leave' kind of look. Hahah.

Wonder how to travel around in South Africa?
Don't worry about it!
Because........... You've got 'Bazbus'!
It basically goes around most of tourist spots in South Africa like Johannesburg, Pretoria, Durban, Garden route and Cape Town.
It offers travel pass that could last for minimum 7 days to 21 days, so during the days, you could hop on and off the bus anytime to go to anywhere!
Hence it is very easy to travel around the nation.

A helicopter and a stuck huge ship at the beach on a foggy day.
Mmmmmm.
That is not really a usual scene to expect on a beach.
Maybe a helicopter is still alright, but a ship?
That ship has been stuck here for almost a year.
Yes, it is literally stuck.
As I know, it had some technical problems so was not able to come through till the habour, but stuck there.
And there is not many options to help this situation out.
So... it is stuck there. :(

Have you met a friend a few miles away by chance before?
I have and it was totally amazing experience!
I was on holidays to Knysna in Western Cape province which is miles and miles away from Cape Town where I was staying then.
Knysna is pretty famous for their fresh oysters so I was trying to find a restaurant that is recommended by the hostel owner in the hostel I stay.
Actually on the way there, I gave up half way, and was on the way back to the hostel.
But then, I suddenly felt really urge to eat the oysters, so I walked back all again.
When I just reached the restaurant, someone called my name from the back.
I was like..... No way.
But it was for real!
My two friends from Cape Town were right there!
They saw me walking around and followed me along to check if it is really me. Hahah.
So there we were.
Eating oysters and sushi in a restaurant that I almost gave up to find in Knysna, far away from where we originally stay.
And it was the very first time for Anna (at the left in the picture) to try oysters.

Life does surprise you with unexpected things sometimes, doesn't it? :)

Monkeys are scary.
You don't think so?
You perhaps have not met this crazy scary monkey yet.
I was having holidays in Durban with friends.
And... one fine day..
Our balcony door was open.
And..... a monkey sneaked into our apartment!!
We thought we could chase him away.
So we tried to scare him off.
But then who knew, he was freaking scary!
He was fighting back to us.
So we all ran away from him to hide.
And the monkey ran so fast to one conner of the kitchen.
And found a banana that was hidden somewhere that we did not even remember that we had a banana there.
Scary monkey!
Could he possibly know that there was a banana even before entering our apartment?
Mmmmmm!
Anyways, bear in your mind - Monkeys are scary, indeed.

Had a bad day?
Things can not be any worse than now?
Well, that is what I felt 2 days ago.
So... the journey of bad starts with.... going to library........ on SUNDAY.
The reason I went to library on a lovely Sunday was pretty simple - I wanted to print some notes out for my assignment.
Tried to print for a printer........... Dang. it says, no jobs available in my account.
Maybe I did not click the 'print' button properly.
So.. I attempted to print, again.
The printer still says the same thing!
OK, let's try different printer.
Right. It says the same thing, again.
Ah.
Looked for someone to help me out, yes, today is Sunday.
No one of ITS people would be in the library to assistant me.
Ah.
But then seems like I always saw ITS people around even on Sundays..
Oh well.
There is no one today.
So I basically went through all three floors in the library to print.
None of them worked.
Fine.
And the story continues with other small little what that annoying things happened...
To make it short, the bad day ended with losing a parking ticket in a shopping mall, and that costs me RM 20 while I actually needed to pay only RM 3.

I then talked to my mum at night.
Told her whatever happened.
She said, oh, that's it?
And suddenly all the rubbish things happened to me that day seems .... does not really matter after all.
Thus, I am not the only one suffering in the whole world.
Right.
It is just a small little thing.
It was just a unlucky day.

I always believe that there will be a sunny day after a rainy day.
If life is giving you hard time, try to believe so.
It does help, for me. ;)

Oh, and about the picture, it's a smiley face cookie! and me. Haha.

I have mentioned that there's one conner where people are selling vintage stuff in Long Street.
And.. I met him there.
And he became a good friend of mine although we only met a few times.
Whenever I walked through Long Street, I always tried to stop by to say hello to him.
He then would ask me, how I am with smiles.
I was on the way to Waterfront from Long Street which takes about 40 minutes on foot one day.
He then handed one hat from the stuff that he was selling to me.
He said, I better wear it if not, my face would get burned since the sun was so hot and I can return it to him next time.
And I managed to give him back the hat before saying good-bye.
with promises that I will come back soon.
I am now feeling little bad, because the promise seems little impossible to happen real soon.

I hope he is doing alright.

Some random people you meet on travel remind you of the place.
And maybe that is the memory holding you.

Yes! We all love to smoke Hubbly-bubbly. Shisa is widely called Hubbly-bubbly in South Africa.
Smoking Hubbly-bubbly on grass on a sunny day would be a great idea to chill.
One funny thing- basically most of people in the resident own Hubbly-bubbly.
Or there will be definitely one person who has it in one group of friends.
We all love it that much!
Or maybe it is the student life in the boring hostel. Hahaha

On the first day of Monash Saturday school, literally every kid called me 'China'.
And played with my hair.
It took quite some time to teach them to call me by my name, not 'China'.

I found it interesting that people often refer the whole Asia to one country, China.
There are 48 different nations in Asia.
But then how come all these 48 nations can be generalised to one nation, China?
I do understand that China is huge and its impact is relatively massive politically, economically and socially in the world.
But still.
That is the problem with the term, Asia as well.
When people refer things to Asia, they tend to only link to China, Japan, Korea and Thailand.
Saudi Arabia is actually belonged to Asia continent.
Turkey is also part of Asia.
Kazakhstan is in Asia too.
Mmmmmm.
The same thing goes to generalising Africa.
People often mistake that Africa is a big huge one country.
And everyone looks the same.
Everyone behaves the same.
Everyone believes in the same religion.
Everyone practices the same culture.
Dang.
Not a good answer.
It actually contains 54 different nations.

Generalisation or rather easily explained 'stereotyping' is not really a wise thing to practice.
It is because it keeps you only in certain ways.
It would prevent you from seeing things from different angles.
It is easy to associate one to his/her nationality, because it seems to tell everything about him/her.
Yet, you do not know him/her that much.
One's passport can't tell every story of the person.
So why not just get to know the person without fitting him/her into your perceptions of country where he/she is from? :)

So there was a huge blackout which lasted for 6 hours last night in the hotel I stay. (Right, I am on holidays. Yay! Yet stuck with an assignment) After long waiting for electricity to come back, it still did not seem to come back any time soon. So I went out to the beach to walk around rather than staying in the hot hotel room with darkness. I laid down on a bench and there were stars shining in the dark, and that brought me back to the memory where I used to put my extra mattress at balcony and lay down there. I used to sit on the mattress just to read books in the day time, but mostly to look at the stars at night. Gentle chilling yet not too cold wind. Numerous stars shining in lines in the dark. Slow yet not too slow music. Perhaps a glass of white wine or a bottle of Savanna. Just a small little thing that I miss caught me in the dark. Oh, and that is a picture of the decoration that I displayed on my window.

Do you have a pet or plant at home?
I used to keep this plants when I was living in a hostel in Johannesburg.
The first is mint herb. I got it in purpose of cooking. Haha.
The second one is just... a vegetable. Hahahah.
I was just curious if it would grow so.... I put it in water and surprising it started to bloom.
Pretty little yellow flowers blooming in front of my balcony.
Things like a pet and plant, I think keep you alive.
Suddenly or eventually they become part of your daily life.
And.. you give them your heart to look after.
Also, I believe, they make you feel.... warm.

....and after having our dumpling supper, we played twister!
Hahaha.
I am telling you it was crazy!
All 5 of us playing the small little twister? CRAZY!
We were all tangled around over bodies.
Hahaha. Good times with good buddies.

Maybe that is why I am writing this blog.
Because I love my lovely friends.
Because I miss them.
Because I love the place.
Because I miss the place.
.. and because they showed me that Africa is not what I thought of.
Not everyone is suffering from AIDS, poverty and war.
Not everyone is naturally bad and rude people.
Not everyone is trying to rob me.
Not everyone is a Black African.

You might wonder why this little Asian girl who had been in South Africa only for 7 months and trying to do something for Africa or acting like an African to bring a change.
But hey,
Yes, I am not an African but I can stand for them, because I care about them.
Thus, we all live in very globalised world where nationality does not have much meanings any more. Where you feel belonged to, that is where you can call home.

DUMPLINGS!
A friend of mine, Nasreen used to call me 'dumpling'.
Well, that is just one of nicknames though. Hahah.
She then one day curiously asked me if I really have dumplings at home.
Luckily I just bought some dumplings from China Town in Johannesburg not so long ago.
So a number of friends, Mugurey, Lewis, Albert and of course, Nasreen came over for dumplings that night.
So it was their very first time to see the real dumplings!
Cool right?
At first I told them to dip the dumpling with soy sauce and eat, but then sooner or later they were looking for tomato ketchup.
And eventually I was the only one eating the dumplings with soy sauce, everyone else was eating with ketchup.
Mmmmmmmmm.
So you know now, if you want to do some dumpling business in Africa, serve it with tomato ketchup! :)

Every year Cape Town celebrates Christmas Lighting Festival before the Christmas.
The entire Cape Town from the Cape Town train station to Adderly Street is always full of crowd to celebrate the festival.
Before turning on the Christmas lights, there will a concert performed by popular singers in South Africa like Kurt Darren and Freshlyground.
After the last song of the concert, the lights will be finally on.
All different designs of lights will be brightening the city till the Christmas holidays.
Celebrating Christmas in summer could be very special thing for those only used to have it during winter.
If you are travelling all along on Christmas, do not be sad and depressed all by yourself at the room. Dress up with a star and head to any party in Long Street!
You will never feel lonely.
Celebrating Christmas with total stranger can be very fun! :)
and I promise you, they will never let you feel foreign there.

Come for the amazing waffle in the Old Biscuit Mill Market!
As mentioned in the previous post, it is held on every Saturday.
It is like an open market, selling all kinds of food.
There are fresh fruit or vegetable juice, smoothies, freshly baked bakeries, samosas, sausages, sandwiches and of course waffles!
I can guarantee that that waffle is the best in the entire Cape Town.

Hello, boy! What are you doing up there?
I met this cute boy on the way to the old biscuit mill market that is held every Saturday.
This chubby cutie boy was laying on the wall like in the picture above.
A friend of mine and I asked him to look after the car since we just bought a surfing board.
We then offered him R 5 if he would do great job to look after the car for us.
The boy then happily took the deal, and when we finally came back from the market he was still there looking after the car.
Since he was so cute, I asked him if I could take a picture of him.
After taking a picture he was asking when he could get the picture.
I could not yet answer him confidently, because I was leaving on that day.
I then just said 'when I see you again, maybe sometime soon'.

And... I forgot about him till now.
Hopefully I can pass the picture of him soon someday.
His such a lovely smile makes me smile all the time I look at this picture.

Going through busy hectic days?
Seems like the whole world is turning its back on you?
Well, then take a break and slow down things.
Take your time, no one is rushing you, but yourself.
When you take one step back and walk slowly, you could see more small little things that you could have missed.
If I walked so fast then I could have missed the boy.
I would then have missed out small little chat with the boy and his lovely smile that makes me happy too.
:)

What do you think the thing hung on the clothing rack

I thought it was............... :/
Well, let me tell you the whole story about that.
I wondered "Wow. Who would want to dry seaweed like that?"
My friend then said, "Oh, yea. Why does the person want to do that?"

There we were wondering why one would like to dry seaweed on a clothing rack while the sea is far away from the city.

My friend then suddenly broke the silence and said with a surprise, "Oh, no! That is not seaweed!!!!"
"It is wig!"

That's right, it was a wig! Well, pieces of wig.

Absolutely no offence to anyone.
It was just a huge cultural shock for us, indeed. :)

So there we, a group of friends were sitting in front of the God's Window.
